Jays Set To Throw Fans A Bone? An Overweight, Substance Abusing, Crazy, Oft Injured Bone?

THE DIAMOND…I’m not sure how Toronto fans will react to the news that the Jays are, according to S I, a frontrunner in the race to sign a 40 year old Manny Ramirez. Say it ain’t so. The perennial substance abuser will have to sit out the first fifty games of the season, regardless of where he signs, and will then be suitable strictly as the DH. Manny is crazy, and also, lately, a regularly injured carzyasbatshit man. A signing of the admittedly high profile player would appear to be a sop to complaining Toronto fans, ones desperate to see the Jays pump some life into their anemic payroll…

LEAF NATION…oh, crazies, where have you been? One loss, last night to Winnipeg, and the nutbars were back flooding the airwaves, demanding Brian Burke either resign or make a blockbuster trade.

Listening to Frost’s after game show last night, I gained understanding why the loons are going starker’s. Why, for them, the GM job would be a breeze.

Want Eric Staal from Carolina? Easy. You just sent them Kadri, Schenn and a second round pick and, boom, he’s yours!

How about Getzlaf from Anaheim. Well, that’s a deal that could be concluded in a jiffy, as long as you can part with, of course, Kadri, and then Komisarek, Gunnarson and, say it with me, a second round draft choice.

Basically, according to the lunatic fringe, you just bundle up your underachievers and disappointments and package them off for a superstar.

Life is frustrating in the loonie bin. And the nutters get particularly crazy as they wait for Coast to Coast to start, especially after a Leaf loss…

…Toronto is in Philadelphia tomorrow night and it is important to see Kessel and Lupul get some production against the tougher teams…

PONIES…Woodbine begins accepting shippers this Saturday. The training track is set to open this coming Sunday. Normally this is a glorious sign of spring’s coming arrival, but the winter in Toronto has been so mild and dry that it feels almost anticlimactic. Jennifer Morrison notes the horses have been standing in mud all winter, not snow, so hopefully they’ll be anxious to get back to running. With an extensive training session (opening day is Friday April 6th) the local yokels may be able to repel some of the dead fit invaders that always seem to do so well in the meets opening days. Something to watch for unless, of course, the snow does eventually arrive in the Big Smoke…

…another great sign of an impending spring, and of Kentucky Derby Day, is the first Steve Haskin “Horses To Watch” (on the Bloodhorse site) column. It’s a mixed bag this year with Union Rags, an undisciplined animal, generally viewed as the horse to beat on the first Saturday in May. He would be a “lukewarm” favourite at best, and this is clearly a year when the late bloomers will dominate…the first Kentucky Derby wagering pool runs from this Friday until Sunday. Mark my words; the “all others” option is going to be pounded down to 6-5, or even money…
