The Shameless Kiss of Vanity
GRID IRON…Jake Delhomme, who can’t play even a little anymore, will draw 18 million dollars in compensation in 2010. He’ll receive money from his old team, the Carolina Panthers, and his new team, the Cleveland Browns…it might be down to the Oakland Raiders or the Chicago Bears for Terrell Owens. It will be interesting to see if the palpable lack of interest in the diva wide receiver will in anyway affect his attitude. The end is nigh for the 36 year old…I’m bullish on the Miami Dolphins, bearish on the Denver Broncos. Bill Parcells is consistently making the nice move while addressing the shortcomings of his team. Josh McDaniel was brazen and entitled last year. His tandem of Kyle Orton and Brady Quinn is going to get old very soon. The Broncos lost eight of their last ten games and have made little progress in the off season…the San Francisco Chronicle reports JaMarcus Russell was a no-show at the Oakland Raiders off-season workout program Monday. Bruce Gradkowski and Charlie Frye, the Raiders other QB’s, were in attendance…Peter King of SI advocates the Philadelphia Eagles moving Donovan McNabb. Why? King notes the Eagles live in their own version of Groundhog Day, with every year the same. King believes Kevin Kolb, the current back-up, offers the Eagles the best chance to get over the hump…
ICE…the Boston Bruins face the Pittsburgh Penguins on Thursday night in Beantown. It will be interesting to see if Matt Cooke plays for the Penguins. The mood is charged, to put it mildly, with the Bruin players facing criticism for not exacting revenge after Cooke chopped down Marc Savard…the Washington Capitals and the Chicago Blackhawks could meet in the Stanley Cup final and now they have some bad blood of their own brewing after Alex Oveckin’s reckless hit on Brain Campbell. The Hawk defenseman could be done for the season…I caught the New Jersey Devil - Boston Bruin game at The Rail last night and was treated to a dazzling performance from Martin Brodeur. The New Jersey netminder played as well as I’ve ever seen him, an interesting complication for teams that may draw the Devils in the play-offs. I expect Brodeur to be highly motivated after he was embarrassed by his Olympic benching. Vintage Brodeur is an amazing spectacle…the Detroit Red Wings beat the Calgary Flames last night in a game they desperately needed. If the season ended today the first round would feature a Motown - San Jose rumble, a thoroughly appetizing prospect…the Ottawa Senators have lost five of their last six…
PONIES…Zenyatta recorded a Beyer of 100 on Saturday. The competition was uniformly mediocre, a fact overlooked by handicappers like Jennifer Morrison who seem to feel her performance, and Rachel Alexandra’s loss, somehow invalidates the 2009 Horse of the Year voting. What utter rubbish. Rachel was the best runner on the continent last year while Zenyatta couldn’t even muster the courage to start on dirt. Let’s settle this in July at Saratoga…thoroughbred racing returns to Toronto on Friday April 2nd…
FOOTIE…Manchester United superstar Wayne Rooney has scored 24 goals in his last 22 games. He has a total of 32 for the season and is closing in on the 42 tallied by Cristian Ronaldo when playing for the Red Devils two years ago…the World Cup will receive an electric boost if Rooney enters the tournament flaunting his current form. The English team always “brings the noise”, with the controversy and the angst an essential part of the package. Though Spain appears to be the most formidable squad heading to South Africa, other national teams, like Argentina and Italy, appear to have less than stellar line-ups. A red hot Wayne Rooney will have England dreaming of both past glories and the possibilities of the present…
