Quick Memo from Leaf Land

There are two images which have characterized the Toronto Maple Leaf season thus far; opposition scores, TV flashes to a) Mike Komisarek skulking out of the penalty box or b) Francois Beauchemin sheepishly looking downcast between the blue lines where he had, seconds before, pinched forward in an attempt to interrupt a rush. The two Leaf additions are having rocky starts to their life in the Big Smoke.

The Vesa Toskala situation is already dire. The Finn has thrived as an understudy to both Mika Kiprusoff and Evengi Nabokov. His ability to assert his position as a frontline netminder has been consistently undermined by a proclivity for giving up early goals. Tonight, within minutes, the Leafs were behind after Toskala could not handle a long shot from Alex Ovechkin. Enough. It is Monster (Jonas Gustavsson) time in Toronto.

Jeesh, did you hear new Washington Capital Brendan Morrison between periods saying he hasn’t seen as many breakaways by a team in the last three years combined?

Mikhail Grabovski looks like the prodigious talent who always played out of his age group. Hailed as a star from the age of, like, four, the kid rolls through every challenge and collects accolades by the bushel. When he hits the big league it suddenly becomes evident no one ever taught the dude to pass. He’s like a poor mans Ovechkin, a very poor mans Ovechkin, but his inability to incorporate his teammates into his attack is becoming a concern.

Do not understand why Garnet Exelby was not in the line-up last night. Do not. The rugged defenseman has been a dramatic physical force and his tenacity would have been helpful in the first period against the Caps.

Alex Ovechkin on the point during the power play - pretty good, oui?

The Globe and Mail had an interesting article on casinos and their “comping” procedures in today’s paper. It is a sordid practice designed to remove the gullible from their cash. I abhor casinos and play no game where I cannot firmly perceive an edge. Don’t be a loser; don’t work out your problems at a gambling table. Okay?
