My Walk On The Wild Side
On Saturday, about 4pm, I remembered that the Holyfield- Valuev fight was close to getting underway in Switzerland. Hmm, I thought. I’d heard Thomas Hauser rage against the Internet pirates who were stealing signals and, well, a light bulb went off in my head. What if I could be one of those reprobates? I channelled my webmaster and approached my computer with the thought; you will do what I command! My webmaster is extremely confident and I thought if I could mimic that approach I might be successful. Well, by golly, within five minutes of logging on, I had a crystal clear stream of the fights from Europe. I was shocked at the ease with which I had navigated this minefield but, also, thrilled out of my mind. I began to watch the chat room discussion and perked up when the talk began to revolve around fights taking place later that night. “Anyone got a link to the Soto fight?” “Anyone got a link to the Guzman fight?” I was dumbfounded watching these fight freaks, these hard core fanatics, scour the net for connections to fights that were obscure to all but the most devoted adherent’s of pugilism. I was also in heaven. I was like the lion at the end of “Born Free”, suddenly loosed among his own. Here were people like me! Crazed loons desperate to watch even the most humble card. I ended up spending all Saturday night with a couple of screens up, flipping back and forth between fights from Mexico. It was just incredible and I was awed by the power of the net. During the course of Saturday night through to Sunday I was able to watch movies, concerts and multiple NFL games, all the while crouched in front of my computer, never spending a penny. It’s a brave new world for me; I suddenly have the ability to watch every fight card, from whatever the locale, after a few clicks of my mouse. Now, I don’t want to rip off fighters. If a card is available in Toronto for pay, I certainly will pony up. But, it is a far different situation when fights are not available in the Big Smoke. If I don’t have the option of paying I see no reason not to use a site to pull in the feed. I’ll keep you informed as I navigate this brave new world…
