Soldier To Battle In The California Sun
Ten of the last eleven World Series have been won by the team that took the opener. Makes you wonder why we need a best of seven series. The Rays came up cold last night, recording a meagre five hits en route to a 3-2 loss…good to know Kenny “The Snake” Stabler is still out there, navigating them Alabama roads in the dark after midnight, drunk and still damn ornery….we’ll get insight into the capabilities of the Buffalo Bills during the next three weeks as they play divisional foes the Dolphins, Jets and Pats consecutively…Washington Redskin QB Jason Taylor has yet to through an interception this season…did you have tonight’s Sabres - Wild showdown marked as a clash between the NHL’s two best teams? Both teams have yet to lose in regulation with the Sabres racking up only a shootout loss…man, you get Alex Ovechkin in your pool and he decides to go all Jason Blake! Alex the Great has scored in only one game this season, reminding one of Don Cherry’s prediction that this year would bring a reduction in the young Russian’s productivity… interesting to watch the implosion of Martin Biron in Philadelphia. With a dramatic run in last year’s playoffs it appeared the Flyers had an elite level goalie. The only thing Philly has right now is a controversy as the media clamour for back-up Antero Niittymaki to assume the leading role…the best save percentages in the NHL currently belong to a couple of back ups, Halak for the Habs and Lalime for the Sabres…NASCAR moves to the mile and a half track at Atlanta this Sunday. With Jimmie Johnson having crushed the Chase we can expect drivers to espouse an aggressive “nothing to lose” approach to the race. The circuit could surely benefit from some excitement as we lurch to the end of the 2008 season…when will David Beckham’s sojourn with the Los Angeles Galaxy officially be labelled a bust?… can finally clarify the number of children fathered by Evander Holyfield. It’s eleven, by at least seven different women. On a related note, the 46 and “showing it” fighter announced he intends to keep slogging through 2009…Irish training legend Aiden O’Brien seems remarkably circumspect while evaluating the prospects of his contingent in this weekends Breeders Cup. His confidence peaked while evaluating the prospects of Soldier Of Fortune in the Turf. Of his other runners, only The Duke Of Marmalade seemed to capture his fancy, though that one is surely up against it facing Curlin in the Classic…O’Brien’s Dylan Thomas entered last years Turf off the most gruelling Arc win many had ever witnessed. The colt was over the top and bombed stateside as the favourite. Soldier Of Fortune, on the other hand, looked like a pony out for a gallop three weeks ago in France. This one has been pointed to Saturday and must be accorded respect…
