Sundin Vanishes, Leafs Thrive
Very much enjoyed the Leafs - Red Wings last night. Watching a Leaf game without the flaccid Mats Sundin was a delightful development. The impotent Swede cursed the Leafs for over a decade, his passivity masked, admittedly, by a wealth of talent. But every intangible a winner, or leader, requires was sorely lacking in the dainty, impoverished machinations of the blond haired fraud…thought the best players for the Leafs last night were Tomas Kaberle, Pavel Kubina and the energetic Domenick Moore. This has the looks of a team one can be comfortable cheering for…nice to have a little buzz for a Heavyweight fight. The Samuel Peter - Vitali Klitschko battle, slated for Saturday, is genuinely interesting with the Russian returning from a four year layoff to face the erstwhile WBC Champ. Vitali is being bet with enthusiasm and I concur with that approach. Vitali was a genuinely good fighter with far more gumption than his younger glass chinned sibling. Peter is so lackadaisical in his approach to conditioning that he deserves to be exposed…very interesting co-headliner matches the old lion Antonio Tarver against the new face of the light heavyweight division, Chad Dawson. Dawson, somewhat surprisingly, is being wagered on with relish. Tarver has name recognition with high profile wins over Roy Jones and a meaningful part in Rocky 6. He stumbled badly in a loss to underdog Bernard Hopkins and has yet to regain the confidence of punters …whatever the spin, its great news for NASCAR to hear that drivers are scrapping! Carl Edwards and Kevin Harvick became physical while reflecting on the lap 174 wallop at Talladega last Sunday…the race from Lowes Motor Speedway is scheduled for Saturday at 7.30pm, the perfect time for a nice crashnbash. Though we are only halfway through the Chase, this one sure feels over… Jimmy Johnson, come on down…at Woodbine…in the First, the lightly raced ROYAL CORREDOR has two recent bullet works to recommend. She attracted the services of Pat Husbands and merits attention in a group without a tiger…PRIOR looks inviting in the Second. The filly has been freshened by Asmussen and is not ambitiously spotted…ELISION makes her second lifetime start in the third for a trainer who is very patient with his firsters. She can be expected to improve off that solid showing Sept 5th…in the Fifth JOLLY JORDYN has circled back to his top and takes a modest step up the claiming ladder. He has to lug the cement bag known as Jerry Baird but even a blind squirrel gets the occasional nut…SOUPER VEX has the look of an intriguing longshot in the Sixth. He ran into trouble while flying in the late stages of that effort Sept 7th…EL BRUJO drops from the open Swynford in the Eighth and could have his foes over the proverbial barrel…we’ll close the day with a couple of potential boxcar upsets, EAST FACE, even in his last to shock the yokels in the Ninth and, in the Tenth, LONG POND…
