Canadians have special memories of the late Paul Newman. We’ll always remember the actor as Reg Dunlop, impassioned coach of the legendary Charlestown Chiefs…Jaguars wide receiver Troy Williamson was asked who he would change places with for one magical day. His choice? Tupac Shakur. He’s dead, Troy…Sugar Shane Mosley was dramatic in victory last night, knocking out Ricardo Mayorga with one second left in the twelfth. A pairing with welterweight champ Antonio Margarito would be sensational. Mosley weighed 153.5 for last night’s fight but has previously stated that he feels best at welterweight (147). On the undercard Andre Berto, the man many feel is the future of the decision, continued his schooling (this despite holding a “title”) with a 12 round pounding of recent Oscar De La Hoya opponent Stevie Forbes…Curlin was transcendent in victory in the Jockey Club Gold Cup at Belmont yesterday. The four year old colt fell behind early, despite a moderate pace, and then engaged in a drag race with top three year old Mambo In Seattle as that pair roared back into contention. On the far turn Mambo cried “uncle” and Curlin was then set down to engage the “loose on the lead” Wanderin’ Boy. Everything had gone the way of Nick Zito’s seven year old warrior to that point and only a truly memorable runner would have been able to relegate him to the runner-up position. Curlin proved to be one for the ages with a monumental surge through the stretch to snatch the win. This colt deserves top billing stateside and it is specious, at best, to suggest Big Brown is his superior… The New York Rangers have unveiled a new top line, Markus Naslund and Chris Drury centered by Scott Gomez. The troika represents the high profile acquisitions of the Blueshirts during the past two off seasons…Sergio Garcia takes a three shot lead into the final day of the Tour Championship. Phil Mickelson and Anthony Kim are three shots back…

At Woodbine SOUTHERN KITTEN has been desperate for the class relief she’s afford in the first…she can combine with KESAGAMI in the second for an okay double payoff…SINFUL VOWS is a lightly raced dropper in the third, fits a formula that’s been deadly the past week…WOLLEMI PINE might escape punter’s notice off the drubbing in the Grade 1 Woodbine Mile. He’s back with the local yokels now and can prove imposing…SLIGOVITZ is a solid choice in today’s Ontario Derby…
